Dua — calling upon Allah — is described as the essence of worship. Weaving short supplications through your day keeps your heart connected to Allah in the small moments, not just in formal prayer. Here are the essential daily duas every Muslim benefits from knowing.
Why learn the daily duas?
The Prophet Muhammad taught short duas for almost every daily action — waking, eating, leaving the house, and more. Saying them turns ordinary routines into acts of remembrance and brings barakah (blessing) into your day. They are short, easy to memorise, and suitable for children and adults alike.
Duas through the day
- On waking: a dua thanking Allah for restoring life after sleep.
- Before eating: saying Bismillah; and after eating, a dua of gratitude for the food and drink.
- Before sleeping: a dua placing yourself in Allah’s care for the night.
- Entering and leaving the home: short duas seeking protection and blessing.
- Entering and leaving the bathroom: brief duas of seeking refuge and forgiveness.
- Before travel: the dua for a safe journey.
- In distress or worry: duas that bring calm and reliance on Allah.
How to learn them well
Start with two or three you will use most — perhaps the duas for eating and for waking and sleeping — and add more once they are firm. Learning the meaning alongside the words makes them far easier to remember and far more sincere. Because these are the words the Prophet used, learning the correct Arabic wording matters; a teacher can make sure you have them exactly right.
Teaching duas to children
Daily duas are a wonderful, gentle way to introduce children to their faith. Attaching a short dua to a daily habit — before meals, at bedtime — helps children absorb them naturally and joyfully, building a lifelong connection to Allah.
